Don't Mess with Sylvester

We have come to the end of another year- another decade too. December 31st is upon us and worldwide folks will ring in the new year with celebrations.

Well, almost everywhere. I live in Israel, where December 31st (and January 1st too)  is just another regular day. True, we will recognize that 2010 is starting, but we won't have a day off for it. No New Year's Day college bowl games for us. No parades, no kissing at midnight at the stroke of midnight - well, at least not for me.

It can be understood that in Israel, the Jewish state, January 1st is no big deal. After all, we Jews already had our New Year, Rosh Hashana, back in September. And our count is a bit higher, we did not flip the calendar to 2010, but celebrated the start of year 5770!

The Israeli term for New Year's night celebrations, "Sylvester," was the name of the "Saint" and Roman Pope who reigned during the Council of Nicaea (325 C.E.). All Catholic "Saints" are awarded a day on which Christians celebrate and pay tribute to that Saint's memory. December 31 is Saint Sylvester Day - hence celebrations on the night of December 31 are dedicated to Sylvester's memory.

So far, so good. Well, not really. You see this 'Saint Sylvester' has a problematic biography for Jews. According to some sources, the year before the Council of Nicaea convened, Sylvester convinced Constantine to prohibit Jews from living in Jerusalem. At the Council of Nicaea, Sylvester arranged for the passage of a host of viciously anti-Semitic legislation.

So it can be understood why many Jews in Israel object to their fellow Israelis celebrating 'Sylvester'. We already had our 'New Year' and why call the day 'Sylvester' in Israel if the guy it was named after was not such a "cool cat".

Speaking of cats, there is one objection that never gets raised. Calling New Year's Eve 'Sylvester' is a slight to the Looney Tune's, Sylvester the Cat! He deserves better.

And he's not the only Sylvester I feel is getting short changed, what about Sylvester Stallone? Let's show a little respect to Sly. The thespian who brought us Rambo and Rocky shouldn't be mixed into this controversy. 'Yo, Adrian, you wanna kiss me at midnight? It's Sylvester!' It doesn't sound quite right.

So, my fellow Israelis, if you really feel you must go out and celebrate on the evening of December 31st, just call it New Year's Eve (or the Hebrew equivalent). Why throw more fire on the "Sylvester" controversy?

And even if you don't care about some old saint, please refrain from calling Sylvester for my sake - and if that's not enough, do it for  Sly Stallone and for Tweety's nemesis, Sylvester the cat.
